Naperville is very nice next to Chicago.Hotels are cheaper and have nice downtown with riverwalk.
Morton Arboretum is 2 miles away:

South Haven is nice place to get some sunsets on Lake Michigan.

and there are plenty of photo ops there!

to fill that range and was looking at the 28-135IS or maybe the sigma
24-70 2.8,
count me in! I'd vote for the Chicago area as well (selfish, me) but I'd like to suggest another cool photo op - The Janesville Wisconsin Air Show will be held on June 26 & 27. Maybe we could spend Friday evening/all Saturday in the Chicago area and then drive up to Janesville to see the Thunderbirds and other planes on Sunday? If that's too much of a haul, the Chicago area, as Kosta has shown has enough interesting photo ops for us all.
If the weekend of the 26-27 is acceptable, I'm willing to help p0lan something.

I sold it for $125,didn't like it between 24-28 and 70-135,very fuzzy!
From 28-70 was good !

I vote for Chicago as it's central and there's lots of things going on. The architectural boat tour (or even one of the walking tours) is a must for an afternoon and a walking expedition of Grant Park or Lincoln Park - with its zoo (free), nature museum (butterflies galore), ponds (prairie plants), lake shore etc. can also be stimulating.
I'm up for Chicago. Haven't been that way since the tall ships festival last year. To vsmed1968 with the gateway camera,.. I'm sure no one cares what kind of camera you have. The camera dosn't make the photographer. I'd even let you use my S2 for a bit.

There are two bed and breakfasts (!) in Chicago that I know of that can be an option for people who are into that. One is a funky house on Janssen near Southport - owned by a couple and the other (which I haven't seen) is I think in an apartment owned by one of the news people on ABC Channel 7.
There are also some inexpensive hotels (like Comfort Inn on Diversey) and lesser known hotels on Sheridan and Foster (they're ok if you just want something to lay your head on) - on the bus or train route - very convenient. I stayed in one when my house was being remodelled - I think it was between 50-70/night. But we can probably swing some deals at some downtown hotels - last year I stayed at Swisshotel for 85 bucks a night during the July 4 weekend.
If you go the suburb route, stay at hotels near Metra stations - coming into the city is just a scenic train ride away.
If I still lived in that neck of the woods I'd suggest LaCrosse, Wisconsin (about a 3 hour drive from Milwaukee). Beautiful area, great historic city, no crowds. It's at the confluence of the Mississippi river and the Black river. The the city is surrounded by bluffs, there is a beach, river walks... Go to Goose Island after the sun goes down and park, and you'll see deer, fox, skunk, racoon from your car. Or go there during the day and rent a boat to explore the marshes of the Mississippi.
