I have a short video (just under 3 minutes) taken with my Panasonic FZ5 - in other words, very low quality. I want to share it with a cousin who lives half way across the country, and the only way I can think of to do so is by putting it on Youtube. There is nothing personal on it, so I don't mind who sees it, but the only sound was a radio playing in the background, and obviously that sound is not suitable for putting on the Net. Is there any way I can remove the sound without specialized programs?
You will need a rudimentary editor to do the job. If you are running Windows XP or later, you may already have Windows Movie Maker. If yo don't have it, Google it, you can download it from Microsoft for free.
If you're on a Mac, i believe iMovie can strip the sound off the original and it can certainly let you add new sound ... music, sound you record, whatever.

I tried that. Sadly it doesn't recognise the file format.
.mov is a quicktime format. Which is Apple. So You will not have much luck getting a Windows App to open it or play it for that matter. You should be able to find a trial version of one of the many editors out there.
How large is the file? If it is small enough that you can some how get it to me. I can remove the sound for you.

Thanks for the offer. The file is about 66mb - if I thought email was an option, I would have just sent the video to my cousin.

Thanks Judi, that sounds perfect. I have never used Youtube before so I didn't know that.
Also, if you're putting it on Youtube but want it to remain private, you can get a secret youtube URL to email to your cousin. That way they're the only person who sees it - They don't even need a youtube account to click on the link.
After you've uploaded to youtube, edit the settings and you'll see the privacy options.
If you and your cousin both have broadband internet connections and a program like Windows Live Messanger. You could do a file transfer that way. If you both have fast connections it wouldn't take more than a few minutes to transfer 66mb
I don't need it to stay private - it's just a video of some birds I've been telling her about so I don't care who sees it. And I don't think either of us is set up to do a file transfer, so Youtube is the best way to go.

Well I'm not winning yet. Youtube doesn't recognise .MOV videos either. If I can't figure a way to convert it to something else, I'll just have to give up.
I haven't told my cousin about it, so she'll never know the difference and I'll just send some still photos.
there are other video hosting sites on the web, One of them must support .mov or at least convert them after upload.
I wouldn't know where to start looking. And I already opened an account with Youtube, so I'd like to use it.
On a side note, I have a really old (and quite big) video camera lying around. One from the pre-digital days. Is there a way I can convert movies taken with that to a digital format? I've been thinking about buying a digital camcorder, but as I see a Canon 7D in my future, I'm not sure whether to buy the camcorder or whether it's just a waste of money.

I found software to convert the file to .avi and in the process was able to remove the sound. The file shrunk from 67mb to just under 10mb, so the picture quality is probably worse than ever, but at least I will now be able to send my cousin a link. I will probably add sound first, but I've had enough for now, and will attend to that tomorrow.
For those who are interested, I will add a link to the video here after the bird challenge is over. I don't want it to influence voting if I use these birds in my challenge entry.

There are many devices to digitize video from old analog camcorders ... for example, check out this item available from Roxio ...
Thanks. I think I might buy a digital camcorder instead. I'd like to give stock video a try as well and I really don't want to use that big old thing, even if I can get the quality I need. I never could bring myself to carry it around even when it was new.
