I have voted this challenge but am concerned that there are many there that are simply sihloettes which are as different to cotre Jour as chalk is to cheese so I have not rated thes highly at all. your thoughtsMine are DNMC
i would agree that many are sihloettes, but that seems to have been a large portion of the previous Contre-Jour challenge, and many high scores were sihloettes.
i tried to go as literal as possible "against the light" while not being a sihloettes, and it is not scoring great.
To me a silhouette is a contre-jour or back-lighted subject. I believe that, in the case of backlighted, you have 2 options:
1. you modify your settings and take as well back-light as subject into account, to have the subject detailed resulting
2. you don't modify your settings and take only the back-light into account and create a silhouette.
Both versions meet the challenge, both versions are contre-jours.

Contre-jour produces backlighting of the subject. This effect usually hides details, causes a stronger contrast between light and dark, creates silhouettes and emphasizes lines and shapes.
I agree that silhouettes are also contre jour. Contre jour is against the light. Not against the light and extra light added or not added.
Now, I do think that something should be against the light--having the light source on one side of the picture and a subject on the other side, doesn't seem contre jour to me. But I had never heard the term until this challenge, so I'm not going to vote those any differently, so I certainly don't have enough information to make that determination.
I didn't introject in this thread before, because it had fallen into the void on it's own, but I think threads like this serve no purpose during a challenge, except maybe as an attempt to sway voters towards one definition.
They are not against the forum rules as I read them per se, but I don't see why this type of discussion should go on DURING a challenge. Before is fine. After is fine. Might be a good time for a rule amendment.

I thought the same thing when I first came across these discussions. But, whereas some people are posting just to complain about people cheating, (in their opinion), ut a lot of these cases are people questioning their understanding of a challenge. I think it's better to discuss it than to just vote if you're unsure. I don't think you are going to change people's minds, if they understand the subject. But making a confusing subject clearer for a voter is a good thing. This is a learning environment, after all.

That's what the "before the challenge discussion" threads (there's almost always one) are for. Posting of a few individiual opinions of either the quality or appropriateness of the challenge entries during the voting seems to me an attempt to influence how people vote.
