For the bedroom so it doesn't need to be anything fancy. In fact, I'm considering hooking up an old Altec Lansing set I have for an old PC that sounds pretty good. Anybody have any recommendations for a decently sounding inexpensive 2.1 system for the TV?
I used to have an Altec 4 speaker+sub hooked up to our bedroom tv. It worked quite well. Only drawback was, The speaker volume control was on the front left channel speaker and when we would turn down the volume of the TV with the remote or turned the TV off the speakers would hum unless my wife or I would get out of bed and turn down the volume on the speaker or shut them off. Not a big issue but kind of a bummer to get out of bed on a cold winter night.. We eventually bought a new TV that had much better sound and stopped using the Altecs.
look for a nice two channel onkyo system. I have one that wasn't too expensive (I think $200 new, but then I got a good deal on the item through my husband's work) and its amazingly good. This will sound like a cheeky question, but do you really care about good sound or do you just want something that isn't your tv's speakers?

Nahh, I'd like a little more than what I'm getting right now (which is the TV sound) but no, it doesn't have to be high quality. The sub is the main thing I guess.
Bugzeye, funny you should say that as that is exactly what I told the missus we would have to do if there was no remote.
Wouldn't you think that with all the features on today's TV sets, a volume-controlled output would be one? But no, the audio out is always at full volume, which is what you want going into another component, but not to a set of powered speakers.
The only "clean" solution is to buy a small two-channel audio amplifier that has a remote, then hook up a standard set of left and right speakers to the left and right channels, and split the signal to go to a powered sub.
By the time you get done buying the amplifier, satellites, and sub, you have spent *considerably* more than a good set of powered multimedia speakers. :-P
Yeah, I've seen those and sorta had it (or one of the others they offer) in mind when I asked the original question. Looks like people either love it or hate it.
