Does anyone know how I would be able to find information on maybe taking a photography class over the summer? I looked at websites for colleges nearby but couldnt really find anything (univ. of kentucky, asbury college, eastern kentucky univ.) if anyone has any ideas i'd greatly appreciate it!
I am wanting the same thing. After reading tons of books, nothing is quite like a hands-on learning environment! I think my area has some "community/adult" classes that you pay for; you might want to see if you have anything like that?
Most photography classes around here are taught at the community colleges. They are film-based classes that include a lot of good information along with film processing and printing.
I wish I could hire a "guru"! LOL Seriously, I think I would benefit greatly from a face-to-face exchange; since photography is so visual and all about light and color, it is sometimes difficult to go by "verbal/written" all the time. I am usually a very book-oriented person, but for instance, with PS editing (as an example), it would sometimes help to have someone with the practiced eye to really lead me to an understanding of my own.
Sounds to me like you'd rather have a tutor than a class. Perhaps try placing an ad in the paper or seeing if there are any dpcers whose work you admire in your area.. Maybe someone would be willing to meet with you once a week or so and help you privately. Might cost you a little more, but I bet it would be a great investment in the long run.

Excellent idea . . . . now I just have to find someone!
Most colleges around here only have the photography classes available over the regular semseters. It costs too much to keep them running when they're going to get such little use, and a much smaller amount of money from the students.
In addition to the regular course catalog look for stuff given through the student union. Most colleges have an arts center and a darkroom/ pottery studio set up and offer one night a week six to ten meeting classes. I have taken courses at the ASUC at UC Berkeley and at various community colleges, none of which were in the course catalog.
PS check out photo clubs as they bring in people for seminars to teach all day or two day classes. I was shocked at the heavy hitters in the photo world who pick up the occasional small check this way.
