Hey folks! A friend of mine introduced me to some pretty amazing web software called 'Gallery'. It's a full-featured, *free* photo gallery package that you can administer from a browser, has accurate hit counting, allows comments, nested albums, photo printing, automatic thumbnails, and previews... the list just goes on and on. If you'd like to see it in action (shameless plug) you can look at mine at "//www.pft.com/~mousie/gallery/". I've hacked at the code a little to change the layout, but you can get a pretty good idea of how it works.
If you are willing to spend some money ($80, I believe), Photo Post is an excellent option. A somewhat modified version of this is what what runs the Photocritic galleries, and I am very happy with it.
Photo post features Bulk uploads, commentary, ratings (although I don't use the two latter), and seemingly very very fast.
Pekka Saarinen has written some nice software, The Exhibit Engine, which is suitable for small (to medium) sets of images. Without any actual experience with it, I can only assume that it provides only a single layer of access to groups of photos (exhibits).
