I didn't enter it but I think the banana challenge is hilarious. I enjoyed looking through the entries! It's nice to see people just having fun with photography.
I think its fairly difficult to make a banana really stand out and look great. Not impossible, but not an easy challenge. Given that, and it was a 24 hour challenge, well um...here we are :)
I think some people take things WAY to serious, I know this is a site for the Pro's but PLEASE sit back, put ya feet up, and stop being so bloody BORING. I'm here to have fun and learn some tips and all my pics i entered haved finished 100th+ but im still smiling. I thought the 24 hour challenge was FUN.

Unfortunately 'fun' doesnt always win here so you have to weigh up whether you want fun and a low score, which to some isnt fun, or a serious shot and the potential of winning. Although it's always good to throw in a fun shot once in a while and recharge the batteries.
I don't think fun images and success in challenges are mutually exclusive. Both my ribbon winners have had humor as their main element.

I'm not saying they cant and dont, just not usually unless they contain other elements. Both of your ribbon winners had elements of humor but also a 'wow, neat' and certainly originality with your groundhog impersonation!
Curious why the drive to win these challenges? There is no prize that I know of. Is it recognition? I've been participating in a bunch of online challenges (dpreview forum challenges for Sony and Canon cameras) and have learned many things there. A. People have wide ranging tastes so pictures I love often don't win and I can rarely psych out whether mine will win or not. B. There are many really good photographers in the groups who do challenges and they have great photos that I can learn from. C. My work is gradually improving. D. Best to have fun and enjoy what you are doing since you can't predict whether you will win or not. E. Always submit work you like or think is interesting yourself and don't worry if others don't like it. I try to follow all of these precepts though I do occasionally get a bit frosted when an image of mine that I really like gets poor reception from others. Guess I'm human. ;) Ann

I actually liked doing the photo for the banana challenge. I took this just as seriously as I took any of the others of entered so far. I'm of the mind that any subject can be great art. Andy Warhol made a great silkscreen of a banana, not to mention the classic album cover for The Velvet Underground and Nico
I got a laugh out of some of the entries (didn't necessarily vote higher on them). Put it this way, I wasn't bored during the voting. I thought there were a lot of pictures that weren't too good but imaginative. The important thing is there were some really good photos which proves the notion that any subject is art in the hands of a talented artist.

Last night my daughter asked me if people get anything for winning. I imagine what the ribbon winners get is a greater likelihood that someone will buy their prints since that is one of the benefits of being a registered member. There is certainly a monetary reward if you look at it from that perspective.
