I used to be pretty good about keeping my camera around, but lately I've been leaving it at home more and more. Mostly because I don't like leaving it in the car, especially as the weather gets hot.
Well, today I was taking a shortcut through a residential neighborhood and came across a house fire. The poor people's house was fully involved, with flames shooting about 20 to 30 feet in the air. The first fire engine was just pulling up, so I drove about a block away - to be sure that I was well out of the way - parked, and got out to watch for a bit. My camera, of course, was sitting two miles away in my living room.
As I watched, I felt sorry for the family and impressed with the firefighters, who knocked down the bulk of the fire in under a minute - it looked like they saved most of the house with the damage mainly confined to the front porch. But, at the same time, I was kicking myself for getting out of the habit of having my camera along most of the time. It's true what they say of never knowing where an interesting photo will present itself.
Lesson learned: don't leave your camera at home...... one reason it's tough for me to buy a dSLR or 8 megapixel camera because of the size, I wouldn't bring it with me where ever I go.

i agree with that thought, but man, go ahead and upgrade and just keep the old one to carry around just in case! i will as soon as i am able
On a similar note, if you are even slightly tempted to shoot something DO IT! You never know if it will be the same later. I drove past this run down old building every day on my way back from work. I always said I should snap a couple of shots. The day I decided I was gonna stop for sure... Buildings been demolished. Not a scrap left. Lesson learned!
Oh and my Rebel and I are unseperable. You never know when you'll want it!

Me too. I don't carry a purse any more. Just my camera - safely tucked into it's case. I used to use a little Toshiba which fit into a pocket of my purse, but things have changed since I got my Rebel. Now, if I could only start taking pictures worthy of the camera....
heh...my rebel is very rarely allowed to leave the house. my parents wont let me take it many places. it took a pretty big argument just to get them to let me take my film rebel to NYC a few weeks ago. but i always have a camera with me even if its just a crappy disposable one haha. (one too many spontaneous road trips with friends...)

I take my DSLR quite a bit, but I always have my tiny digicam 3mpx in my purse... just in case! So, just for fun, try to get a cheap small digicam on ebay just to have with you at all times! Then, have your DSLR for your specific photo missions and events.
Size was one of the reasons I got my Canon A80. The other was the extra pixels. I now leave my Olympus at home quite often, but whichever camera I take on a given day, I often wish I had the other one.
