I think it would need to do minutes, or people might log in with 15 minutes to go - see it says "1 hour" and then come back 25 mins later with a photo only to see they're too late. Further away from the deadline this isn't as vital.
I think it would also add a fun sence of urgency and tension for those people who stay up all night to count their first few votes :P
I actually suggested almost this exact thing to Langdon privately several months ago. I said it would be helpful for those who were not in the server's time zone (US/Eastern). My idea was to keep the:
Submission: May. 19th - May. 25th
line up until 24 hours before the deadline, and then switch to:
Submission: [orange] Less than 24 hours remaining [/orange]
Submission: [orange] Less than 23 hours remaining [/orange]
(etc.)
then, when it got down to less than an hour:
Submission: [red] Less than 6 minutes to go! [/red]
Submission: [red] Less than 5 minutes to go! [/red]
(etc.)
The use of "Less than" was so that it was still valid even if they used the "Back" button on their browser to get back to the home page, technically it would still be valid. =]
I suggested this be implemented not only for the submission deadline, but also the voting deadline. And Tina's right, it would be very easy to code up in PHP. Maybe if I write the code and send it to D&L...
Go for it :) I think it should still have number of days remaining. I'm often unsure how many days it is until a certain date - but I know it's always monday or wednesday. A newbie wouldn't necessarily. I get especially confused at the start/end of a month cos I dunno how many days are in each month, hehe.
wouldn't it be just as easy to list the deadline in all the time zones, and use a geographic location beside each time zone to aid in which zone people are in?

A lot of time it is just not realizing that it is 12:00am eastern time. Also most of the time the only ones missing the deadline are the ones in the central, mountain and pacific time zones.

We have a lot more than the 4 continental US time zones to deal with. If we implemented the ability to customize for your local time zone, we would have to do this for every time zone around the world (and there are more than 24 of them, plus the various worldwide incarnations and schedules for Daylight Saving/Summer Time.
