I'm fine with the 720 vertically, 800 would be a pain, but I'd like the larger horizontal size.
I think the big issue, however, is the 640 size limit. WE NEED MORE THAN 640!!! (especially since I've been thinking it's 630, and been saving it at that size all this time :D

This new resolution is great for me because i'm just an amateur and still don't have to worry about copys of my shots spreaded at all the internet. I keep thinking about the professional photographers with their amazing blue ribbons here at 800x800 pixels. Won't this be an easier way for the "thieves" to use your shots for other things?
i posted this question at the change of rules for the triptych challenge too. I'm really thinking about these other photographers to vote. Though the votes for 720 are really few.
Changing to 800x800 would suck IMO. Vertical Horizontal scrolling issues, and if someone prefers NOT to use the full size the friggin "you didn't use the full 800" police will be out in force on down voting (kinda like DNMC). Not to mention better freebies to all the stinking places that lift images from DPC.
If this change is implemented I may seriously consider letting my membership lapse when it comes up soon. :-(

At 300dpi, the jump from 720 pixels to 800 pixels represents an extra quarter inch (2.4" to 2.66"). Your girlfriend might tell you that's enough, but she's fibbing.

Horizontal scrolling for an 800px image? Yikes. Even on my notebook, I wouldn't have any scrolling issues in either direction. How many people are running lower than 1280x1024 these days?

I actually think the 800 pix limit is not a bad idea. As technology improves we should evolve. On the theft thing I have an idea but I don't know if it is possible or not. Is it possible that when you upload a pic to DPC it automattically puts a watermark that is invisible until you copy it to another location not associated with dpc. That way your work is protected, anyone can view it unaltered and noone can download it or copy to a website without proper permission.

I voted yes, and now I'm thinking I shouldn't. 800x800 sure makes it easier for thieves to steal, as someone said. But then again, the details you can put in there? Shivers... I would like that. But, as others have said, I hope this means open challenges "opens" for 720x720.

My main concern is the 640 for Basic. I'd be happy with 720 for all... but that wasn't one of the questions.
I totally agree, I'm not too fond of the 640, just because its basic editing, doesn't mean it needs to be so small...(IMO) and yeah, 720 would be fine for all, but there's a numerous amount of times where I've said to myself "this isn't big enough" lol.
I think if it does raise to the 800, my photos will vary in size..It's all about the presentation..

I'd rather vote for a file size limit than a file dimension limit. After all, I'll bet one of the main reasons for limitations is DASD resources (disk space). Limiting by size will take care of that reason while giving us photographers plenty of leeway to decide the dimensions of our product.
I like the idea of moving it up to 800, but I definitely agree with vawendy that the 640 limit is the real problem. If it is possible to movie basic editing up to 720 and advanced to 800 that would be great.
The computers I use are at 1280x1024 (gf's desktop), 1680x1050 (my desktop), and 1280x800 (laptop). Though I do vote from my laptop from time to time, I don't always do it because it tends to lighten and decrease contrast (in a very nice way, but it's not accurate). I wouldn't miss voting on the laptop because I feel my votes are kind of skewed on it (the move to 800px would force me to be more fair by only voting on desktops), so an 800x800 limit would be good.
About those 100 extra kilobytes though... I don't know, my connection here is kinda bad (2nd gen EVDO = 3 Mbps max, 0.4 Mbps usually) - it takes about 2 seconds to load an image right now, so I guess 3 seconds for 300 KB wouldn't be TOO bad...
Oh, and those 640px limits for open challenges? Bump those up to 720 (as others suggested); the only reason it's 640 is handicapping purposes (sounds kinda harsh, but it is what it is), so as long as 720 was okay for members, it should be okay for "registered users" too.
