Along the lines of this thread, and in the spirit of generating some discussion that may enlighten myself, and hopefully others, I'd like to open a discussion on my September Free Study Image:
I'm normally not at all shocked by my scores, but this one had me dumbfounded. I expected, well, let's just say, something a little different ;-)
I'd very greatly appreciate any and all thoughts on what is right, wrong, or weird with this entry, and why you believe it scored where it did.
I admit...I gave you a 6, because I thought it was a good photograph....however, I had no clue what it was and admittedly thought it was more of a strange rabbit creature with something (I had no clue) coming out of it's butt. That and the rabbit like thing didn't have proper legs. *shrug*
I gave it a 6. I recognized it as a woolly mammoth woolly moth on a mirror. Kind of disorienting, but I often appreciate such stuff because it makes me look more carefully.
I gave it a 9. I thought it was very cool and recognized it was a moth. The clarity of the shot impressed me a lot. I like that it was almost an abstract image. Love the antennae and the creative use of a mirror. I guess I am not really answering your question, but I apparently saw it differently than some of the voters. The voting here at DPC is always a mystery to me. :)
Hmmm, I guess my suspicions were pretty close to the mark. I *was* going for the "WTF Factor" realizing that many folks would not recognize it as a moth. Thus the closer crop. An alternative image of the whole insect really does nothing for me here on DPC; you lose critical detail at 720px, and that is what this shot is all about.

well, you achieved at least part of your goal... the very first thing out of my mouth was "WTF is that"... I didn't get a chance to vote, but I think it may be more pleasing to the eye if the left side wasn't cropped.. I still think if you had this little dude in full view, many people would go WTF... Even now, I know it's a moth and I can't see it.. I wonder if what it looks like with something next to it so I can get an idea of it's size.. It's absolutely the most foreign looking little thing ever.. Pretty cool though now that I know what it is..
I have to agree with Andre. I also think if you had a better angle/composition it would have scored in the sixes. I had a similar entry a while back which I imagine benefitted by the composition.
