Hi,

I'd like to start taking shots of things on a white background. I'm figuring this involves a piece of white cloth and some lamps rigged up someway. I did a search but couldn't find anything here. Any thoughts?

I don't really do this kind of stuff, but I find that portrait-style lighting with a key light, a fill light, and a backlight works. Try it and see if it works for you. That, or PM someone who does a lot of studio photography. Here's the whole page.

Somehow, I don't think you used Google. All I had to do was search for "studio lighting" and then click on the first result, and then on "studio lighting setups" on the left pane and I got that last URL.

Well, maybe not enough, but enough for now. That'll get you some easy lighting tips.

For small objects, you can just use a ledger sized sheet of paper, gently curved upwards to make a smooth and nearly invisible background. I did this on my desk at work:


For larger stuff, you will need to get some purpose made background paper at a camera shop.

also try putting your white sheet of paper with the object on it outside in a shadow so you have plenty of light and very soft shadows.
