I really like as well, very clean and cool, but I agree that it is a tad too gray. What he did was clearly drop some food coloring, but the hard part was getting them all a even distributions, and then a simple copy of each mirrored above. Very nice idea.
The Yellow Splash doesn't have enough detail and the green splash is too messy. If you could even those out a bit I'd like it more. otherwise, great effort.
Sorry, but the yellow really makes the photo for me... You need all four colors. Try something like this:
I lightened it up a lot and used the "replace color" function in Photoshop to turn the background form a light grey to a defined white. I also used the dodge/burn tools on the color splashes to even them out and add detail. Finally, I sharpened the whole thing up, then selectively, this made the image clearer. Open the two images in different tabs and switch back and forth to see the changes I made.
I really like the editing, but I see pretty bright halos around the colors. Maybe it's my laptop screen having so much contrast, but I don't think I'll be the only one viewing it on a laptop. I like what you did on the yellow, it looks a lot less flat now. The red also seems to have too little contrast, you could have a bigger range of brightness in it. You could try uploading a lower-res original here and seeing what people can do with it, then ask for the technique if you like a version. I like getting my hands dirty and seeing what I can do with an image, and so do a few (lot?) of others here.
