Question...can I use any USB external hard drive (as long as it has it's own power source) for DVR recordings?

I ask because our DVR is having trouble and is getting replaced (replacement unit has arrived). We have some shows recorded on the DVR that I want to keep and move over to the new DVR.

According to the DISH Network website (article/info here - see the DISH Compatible External Hard Drives section) it seems that I could use an external drive from most major brands. Then I start shopping around and see some external USB drives that are dedicated to DVR "expansion". ???

Feedback and suggestions GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!

I have a feeling that the ones dedicated to DVR expansion are no different than any other one, but im not an expert. Id assume its specifically a marketing tool.

Thanks. I was wondering the same...

Seems that eSATA is a big deal? Here's a Seagate model designed specifically for DVR use: Seagate Showcase 500GB

Honestly, if I could find one of these available in a nearby retail outlet I'd probably buy this one as it will end up being dedicated to the DVR and nothing else. Price is ok. I've seen a Western Digital (DVR dedicated) model also but it's a bit pricier. Regular external USB drives are available just about everywhere.

I would say go with that...500gb, not too shabby looking (as in I wouldnt mind that being visible on a shelf), and a good brand, and $90 for 500gb is pretty decent to be honest (I mean you can get a tb for a little bit more, but oh well)

If I had time to wait and order it (the 500GB) I'd agree...the 1TB is available at some local retailers, but it's $200. :-(
