Someone help me out here.. when it says "missed focus" I don't think it means that the entire image should be out of focus... something CAN be in focus, you just have to pick something in your image that photographers usually would NOT try and focus on... like the roap on that boat (in the link) you wouldn't normally focus on that, BUT the photographer did and it looks great...
the challenge is NOT "out of Focus", it's Missed focus... I feel that something SHOULD still be in focus....

They are quite a bit similar for sure. Maybe that one in the group isn't a good example? At least you do get a sense of the woman being part of the action and having involvement with what ended up in focus.
This is going to be SOooooo much fun! :-) Probably good that it's getting batted around now BEFORE the challenge goes into voting, but I doubt we'll miss a heated debate during the vote anyway.

Oh sure. NOW this challenge comes up. I have a bunch of missed focus shots from the weekend. Some even intentional! But now there's a challenge, I'm betting I hit everything in perfect focus all week..... grumble....

this one's straight up my alley. With cataract surgery scheduled for
NEXT week, all I need to do for this Challenge is put the camera on manual, focus as usual,
without all that automatic stuff, and start shooting.
How are raindrops on glass different from a microphone or toes? Do you think they are so prominent that they have become the 'subject'?

If you can withstand bizarre judgment... ALL the power to you. I think the Singer/Musician and the microphone would be a wonderful entry because the microphone isn't the subject as I see it. The mic is strong, it plays a major role in the image BUT it isn't the whole message to the image. The singer/musician is equally as strong if one views it artistically and not so literally. In fact who gives a darn about the silly microphone... because it's so sharp by comparison leads me more so to the person in frame. Sharpness shouldn't always dictate what the artists is showing.
The relaxed toes and soft candles are a preamble to the person easing in a bathtub but they aren't the main subject. She's the Rock Star of the image NOT what's in focus. Do you agree?
Viewing images one dimensionally is the base concern with what might transpire the way things are generally seen. The Challenge description is somewhat clear but not enough so where people might fall into a hole. I'll bet there's going to be plenty of motion blurs and those images might get plugged with low scores especially if those are DNMC's according to the description. If the person who wrote the didn't want to include motion blur people should know in advance either way. If they did have it included it doesn't read that way.
I love out of focus photos, they always interested me and its hard trying not to make one of these images a love or hate it type, and I might stay out of the challenge because of it.
So, a different point of view from YOURS is classified as "bizarre" - pot calling the kettle black I see. He-he. I love this place. :-)
Nahhhh... But if you believe that image is about the microphone or the toes and candles, I'd say you aren't looking at them as an artist. You're placing sharpness at a higher premium or you're missing "the forest for the trees", if that makes sense.
I won't even try to define art (I can't) but I do think that good artists show us a different way of seeing things and both those images do just that.

Actually, I am looking at the microphone image as an artist. Who says the subject has to be the person? I can look at that photo and find a storyline simply by questioning the microphone. Sharp, soft, don't care...(absolutely 100% my opinion). Look back thru the Posthumous threads...you'll see that the sharp as a tack, eyecandy photos rarely make my top picks.
Anyway...back to "Missed Focus". Should be fun. :-)
