If I understand correctly, you can use shadows/highlights, and you can select and dodge or select and use levels. (those are the ways I can think of, of hand. And I believe they're all legal)

I used dodge and burn to remove the shadow too, is that legal?
In advanced, yes. As an alternative (a superior one) create a new layer, set layer mode to "overlay" and "fill with overlay-neutral color (gray)", then paint on that layer with black to burn and white to dodge; this is reversible and fadable at will, which direct dodge/burn is not.

Thanks Bear...... What a great mini tutorial on this and one I've "wished" I had.... Geez, sometimes I feel like there's just no way to ever know & remember enough about PS from one week to the next to get done what I want.. lol..
