Depends massively exactly what your subject is, of course. Some kind of graduated filter can help, even on portraits as most highlights will be higher up your subject.
My immediate reaction would be to try to make a virtue of it, if possible ... look for those graphical elements that work in high contrast situations, strong shapes and odd juxtapositions.
