I have a Nikon camera and just one SB-900 flash. Can I use the flash without attaching it to the camera and instead placing it somewhere else as a light source?
What kind of nikon camera do you have? If it supports CLS you will be able to do this easily, and wirelessly.
If not, you still have options: a cord, a wireless radio trigger, an optical slave trigger...... But let's hope you have a nikon with the CLS built in: then you can control the SB900 via the pop up flash on your camera: full TTL or full Manual.

Wireless with TTL? It depends on your camera.
Wired with TTL? You can use something like a sc-17
Just wireless? Pocket wizards

Radio Triggers--I recommend these--inexpensive and reliable, but no TTL control TransmitterReceiver
Optical Slave Triggers -- not the greatest choice, as you will be forced to have your pop up flash in use, so the slave trigger can see that flash and trigger the SB900, and will still be a full manual setup on the speedlight (a radio trigger is a better way to go, imo)

You do not need to buy ANYTHING! Use the SU-4 function that both the SB-800 and 900 possess. It is a built in optical slave trigger.
