I'm sorry for the extremely blurred nature of these shots, but I was trying to do them handheld on the hood of the car (while it was running). Anyway, on the way up to Glacier this last weekend we got to see a super-awesome example of noctilucent clouds. These snaps were at the very end of the show and they are only resized from the JPG with no other PP.

Noctilucent clouds are most commonly seen in northern latitudes during the summer and are the highest known clouds at 76 to 85 km above the ground. They are bright because the sun is still shining on them (due to their height) while it has set for those on the ground.

To me they looked deliciously spooky. Like a giant spectre moving across the sky.

Once again, sorry about the blurriness. I wish I had gotten a better shot or pulled my tripod out from all the stuff in the back.

Had never even heard of them before. Was that up at Glacier on Mt. Baker??

I've never seen them before. We may be just a bit too far south as wiki says they are most commonly spotted at 50 to 70 degrees north. And, no, it wasn't Gacier on Mt. Baker, it was Glacier National Park in Montana. These pictures, however, was taken barely north of Kennewick, WA which is only 46 degrees north.

We saw some very weak NLCs near Wisconsin Dells (43.6°N) last week. The view was interrupted by some lower clouds, and the NLCs were very weak, not at all the beautiful display you saw.

Here is an interesting article from the BBC on new research (by an amateur scientist) concerning predicting the formation of noctilucent clouds.
