Hi i keep looking at sony 717 or Canon PowerShot G2 (G3), which one to buy.
Which one would you recommend,I realy want to take macro photos.
I have looked at "cameras" on this site and both photos are so good.Is the 717 to big for trips.

For my money, if you are really looking for macro capabilities, I'd go with the 717. It has a nice, old fashioned, twist the lense, manual focus feature. This added to a 1/2 inch minimum focal distance really makes for macro shots.
not that i have either one of those cameras ... but i believe the sony would take macro attachments w/out an adapter while the canon would need an adapter. not 100% sure, so maybe one of the sony/canon owners could confirm or deny.
Franziska is right. No adapter needed. I've gotten so close, I hit my subject! Tom is pretty close. The minimum focal range for the 717 is nearly on top of the camera. I really like mine.
What kind of media does your FujiFilm use? I know it's not the Sony propietary type. You might not have to invest in a macro lens for the Sony, but the 32MB it comes with won't hold many high res pics, about 12 to 15, at the most.
I'm inclined to say the F717 is the way to go, but I've seen some outstanding shots from Powershooters too, so I'd wait for second opinions from that side :)
The 717 is really unbeatable in terms of still quality, some of the shots mine produced made me a much better photographer than I really am. Its got a great twistable lens/body and decent ergonomics, plus its 5MP vice 4MP. I haven't used the G3 but its shots look nearly as good. The Sony software/switchology is a serious draw back I think, for example it takes 6 different steps and some mode change time just to delete a shot after you've snapped it (no way to deny a save). Another main drawback of the 717 is that the LCD blanks during bursts, which makes its 3-in-a-sec mode pretty unusable to me. Consider the $200 cheaper 707 too, its about the same camera with a little different color representation (some like it better) and slightly less flexible movie modes, but movies with any of these cameras isn't going to do much for you, for truly usable movies only the Fuji S602 will do.
the f707/717... the 5mp vs 4mp G2/3... 5X threaded 2.0-2.4 zeiss lens... versus the 3/4X non threaded? 2.8? lenses. many more features on the 707. ergonomically better. more control buttons. the 707/717 is much better for the money, i believe.
Ok, I'm here to defend the G2. It can also take great macro shots. Here are a few I took. What I like about the G2 is that you can acutally carry it around anywhere. It's got great optics and takes clear pictures. The manual focus is a little difficult at first, but it works great now. A few of my macro shots (no special attachments) or lens:
The Sony is also a great camera. I almost bought it, but decided to the get the G2 because it was much more portable. Have fun picking a camera. Don't forget to check out the Minolta Dimage 7i.
Heck! Get the Canon D60 of Nikon D100 if you got the $$$ :) I konw I would.
portability??? i carry my 707 in my pocket all the time... every day. it is easily portable.
You must have big pockets :) It's much more portible than it looks when you see it in an ad, but it's quite a bit more bulky than the G2/3... I'm struggling with how I'm going to carry it everywhere and would like to know how big your pocket is...

my pockets arent that big... just normal jeans.. i would take a 717/707 over a g2 anyday. but hey, what will make you happy? will you be glad that you skimped on a few great things for a tad bit smaller of a camera?? or do you want all the features you can get??... just my opinion tho. (717!!) :)

The G2 takes decent Macro shots on its own, but I think to get really good macro shots, you'd need to shell out anohter $200 or so for the Macro lens and adapter. Between the G2 and the G3... The G3 is quite a bit lighter, it zooms a little quicker, and it turns on a bit faster too (which is useful for a spur of the moment picture). I think the G3 has a slightly nicer lens, I've only used one briefly and I bought my g2 before the g3 was available, but I would have picked it over the g3 just because of the speed and lighter weight.
I haven't used the Sony at all so I can't say much anything about it. But judging by the posts from the people who have them, it sounds like the sony 717 would take better macro pics on its own.
And if money is no option, I'd personally be going for a DSLR like the Canon eos-d60 ;)
I've been pleased with the G2 and macro pics. I've actually been really happy with the camera all around. Unless someone has really owned and used both, I think you'll have to take any recommendations they make with a grain of salt.
I added the lensmate adapter and macro lenses to my G2 for maybe $40, but I haven't actually used them much. I do use the on-camera macro mode a lot. My shot in the macro challenge did well. I think you'd be wise to take all the other factors into consideration as well instead of placing so much importance on the macro capabilities b/c I doubt there is THAT big a difference.
