Just saw on the news that there is a Tsunami warning for Sydney down to Tasmania! Doesn't look to dangerous though the main advice seems to be get out of the water because of strong currents Warning posted here. Too bad its the middle of the night here or some Aussie photographers might get some rare Tsunami shots.
Are our New Zealand friends o.k. too? Suemack?? I just saw another 5.8 off the west coast of South Island....
I had contact with Rinac who is on the North Island and she said it hardly made the news there! It was reported as a 6.6 and no reports of damage/casualties. Hopefully those on the South Island are all ok too :o)
Here it was reported as a 7.8 quake but the Sunami warnings for NZ had been lifted.
Oz is still under warning though.
Just heard the morning news, apparently a Tsunami did come through last night, it was all of 17cm (7inches) high. Is it really a tsunami if its lower than the normal waves?
How common are earthquakes in NZ?
My gf will be living there for 4-5ish months and I'll be visiting.

I was about to say they are not that common untill I found this site that states 10,000 to 15,000 per year. I can't speak for the South Island but I have been in a few in the North Island. The Napier earthquake was by far the worst one in recent history. The earthquakes I have experianced here were in the centre of the island & south towards Wellington. As long as you use a fast shutter speed, you'll be right.
We heard about this on the news this morning and right away called home to Wellington to check on our kids at my inlaws house. They didn't even know about the quake or warnings prior to us calling them. I was a bit freaked out for a little bit when the news first broke because we are in the states. We are heading back to NZ this weekend.
