My parents have asked me to photograph a couple of their antiques for a some magazine they subscribe to that is all about people's home interior spaces. So being the photographer in the family they asked if I would do it. I mainly document our vacations, group shots at holidays and I submit to DPC. That is the extent of my experience. I want to do their furniture justice so any tips on composition etc would be most helpful. I have an external flash, silver reflector, white board, a floor lamp with full spectrum light blub and possibly a desk lamp with a full spectrum light blub. Lens of choice will be the 14-45mm f3.5-5.6 Zuiko Digital ED. Is it possible to photograph the furniture and make it look somewhat professional with the equipment I have? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I cant help you on the tech bits , but if you snoop through the magazines that your parents get, you will get some ideas on how to place, what angles and what seems please their specific target. ALso go to web sites

What size is the furniture?... an antique grand piano would be quite different from an antique pipe :-). Do they need it in context of the whole room or just the furniture piece?

I think you will have issues mixing flash & lamps but it's doable... Gel the flash with a CTO or similar to get the colour of the flash to match the bulbs. If it's small enough then use just the flash and reflectors and skip the colour mismatch.

I agree with last one... Hit the crate & barrel or elm or pottery barn type glossy's to see what they do as far as 'posing'... probably also lotsa flick groups would have something worth while.

It does depend on what the piece is. Like, a chair or small desk, something like that, you could probably place by a window and get good effect using natural light. Same principles as shooting a portrait with natural/available light. Definitely check out some mags/websites, to see what type of shots go for that sort of thing.

Thank you all for your tips and suggestions so far. I will check out more websites and get a hold of the magazines. I like the idea of the furniture next to a window so I can get more natural light. Once piece is a sofa and the other is some type of religious altar thing to be taken separately. Off to do some more research.
