Lighting is such a problem for me. I'm ready to get a light stand. I have a clamp light that seems to work ok, but I never have anything to clamp it to. SO..... any advice on light stands? What's the difference in c-stand, pull up, & air-cushioned? Also, advice on umbrellas? Is it important not to have the ribs exposed or does it not make a difference?

Air-cushioned means that when you adjust the stand height, the top piece moves more gently and just just under gravity.

The way I heard it explained is that once you've used a non-air cushioned stand and caught the skin between your thumb and hand between the grips as they crash down when you adjust them carelessly a couple of times, then you use air-cushioned from then onwards...

If you want inexpensive, multipurpose equipment, get a couple of cheap microphone stands with booms and use your existing clip-on lamps. Among other handy things, you'll be able to easily position the lamp down near the floor pointing up for those "spooky" photos.
