Disqualification Message:
You may use only Adjustment Layers (or their equivalent). An Adjustment Layer is a special type of layer containing no image data that lets you experiment with color and tonal adjustments without permanently modifying the pixels. Adjustment Layers must be applied in Normal mode.

Can any one lead me to an example on what these layers are? and how are they used if they do not have a permanent effect on the pixels?
A tutorial would do.

I'm certainly no expert, but I believe an adjustment layer would be creating a new layer over your entire image, then using it to adjust contrast, or levels, or brightness, etc. This doesn't modify your original shot, but changes the entire image. CS4 has these built in, so if you click on "levels" for example, it automatically creates an adjustment layer.

I too am no expert but here is the way I see it. An adjustment layer is basically a transparent layer with no data but when using that layer to PP your image it will only effect the color, hue/saturation, brightness and contrast, etc. Basically it will only do color and tonal adjustments. These type of adjustments do NOT permanently modify the pixels of the the layer below or image as a whole.

NOTE: before taking my advice err on the side of caution and check with SC first.

Anything under Layer -> New Adjustment Layer is allowed, so long as it is applied in Normal blending mode (which it will be, unless you explicitly change it).

If you received that message, it means you might have used a pixel-bearing layer (like you get when you go Layer -> New -> Layer...
