Looking at the new calibration strip below each image I notice that I can't distinguish between the two whitest squares or between the two blackest squares but can distinguish clearly between all the others. Since this is equal at both ends of the scale can I assume that I am calibrated as well as I can be given the limitations of my monitor?
I think it means your monitor gamut isn't wide enough, and that your initial assumption about being as calibrated as your hardware will allow is correct.
