I definitely like the idea and it is a very good try. Here's my help:
One thing that I want to point out is that your background is placed and composed perfectly, not being completely static, but not having so much detail that it takes away from the subject. Part of that plays in the way the subject stands out as well. The leading lines in the background bring me from the bottom and then right and left diagonally which is quite pleasing.
My criticisms are that the blue flowers needed to be a little bit more in focus and if this was taken with AF, then you might need to let it calibrate a couple more times, especially with a multi-layered composition. The top of the shot is mostly just empty space and this happens partly because of the placement of the subject. Normally, when uniform subjects are chosen to be placed in the middle, it is supposed to impose a feeling of equity or serenity. I do not think or I did not get that that was what you were trying to do here. Try placing it along the rule of thirds, especially when the subject is this small in the frame. Otherwise good job, you have a good eye.
