I am currently jobless for the summer and I just finished graduating high school, and I need some sort of job to keep me busy. There's probably been a ton of threads on this, but any advice for getting clients or where to even begin for someone who is a student and is inexperienced? I think it would be more difficult to market my work considering I'm a graduated high school student, but I just wanted to get my foot in the door.

It depends on what you want to shoot, but FWIW, when I started out, I hung around local Rehersal studios/recording studios etc and asked bands if they wanted a free photoshoot - most of the time they would readily agree - getting a promo shoot for nothing and getting to feel like real musicians for a while, I got to build my PF. after a while I had bands approaching me to shoot them, then I started charging, not a lot, but enough to get me eager to learn and earn more.

Well I'm pretty much open to any kind of photography, anything that will build my portfolio. I was considering doing some shoots for free to gain some credibility but I'm not entirely sure where to begin looking. If i put up a post on Craigslist or Kijiji (toronto classified), I'm not sure how well people would respond to free shoots.
If you need to work on head shots and portraits or fashion stuff, look for young models breaking in and trying to build a portfolio, look for TFP (trade for prints) at sites like one model place. if you want wedding work, look around for a decent wedding shooter who needs someone to carry, fetch and eventually backup shoot.
Keep in mind, you will not be making any money here until you have a very strong portfolio and a decent reputation, how long that takes is up to you. But as they say, don't quit your day job.

You can probably learn more from these shots Or a lesson on "what NOT to do" than studying the good stuff. Avoiding cliche...brick walls, train tracks, dark alleys etc. is key.
