Hi All,

Please can you help, a friend of mine has been contacted by a UK manufacturer asking can they license one of his images fortheir product packaging.

Please can anyone offer a figure on what to charge? and licensing advice.?

Heres all the info we have

We would like to use your photos on the packaging to demonstrate the product as affixed to clothing and to give the customer examples of potential application. As I hope is clear, your photos will not be part of the product itself.

I should mention that the photo on the packaging will be no more than 10cm x 10cm.

We would want to use the image indefinitely (initially in the UK but possibly more widely) but we would not want an exclusive licence for the use of the photograph.

Do a forum search on 'Calculator'. I know I've seen a couple of postings about a tool used for pricing. Good luck.

This is what I see posted when this questions comes up...

Ask the company for a budget or what they expect to pay for the artwork. If this number is satisfactory to you then send a contract and the image over. If it is not, then try and negotiate. May seem too easy, and you may try and get lowballed, but it will give you some starting ground. I don't have a good number for you to shoot for exactly.

it seems to me that your client is putting a size element in the mix. with "exclusive rights" size is in no way a factor. exclusivity means that they have the right to use your image in any manner they want. try to negotiate a one time specified use. with "exclusive rights" you should get top bucks. the sky is the limit with this kind of use because even you may not be able to market that image again or for the term of the exclusivity. this is difficult to give you a specific dollar figure because the value is within the image itself and if there is any long term value to the image. good luck!
