It's my daughter's birthday soon, and she's been obsessing about getting a Nintendo DS for months. Apparently her friends have them and there's some sort of wireless capability to play against each other?
Anyway, I don't know anything about these handheld games, so I took a look and right off the bat see that not only is there a "DS" but also a DSi".
I'm taking my lunch today to go and get one of these for her, plus some games and maybe some other 'upsells' if I think they're good.
Any advice for me? Is there a difference between DS and DSi? I assume the DSi is a newer model. I assume she'll still be able to play with her friends on their DS's if she had a DSi.

Both of my girls have had Gameboys for years, and get good use out of them on our eight hour drives to visit my brother, so this also means I'll be buying a Nintendo DSwhatever for my soon-to-be eight year old a month from now.
How is battery life?
Will I have to upgrade some sort of memory or other secret-until-you-buy-it shit?

Oh, that's a concept, to go to Nintendo's website instead of just the stores'. Now that I've watched Nintendo's video, I want one too, dang. It sounds like it will be able to run the internet through my home's wireless network. I wonder if it will be able to validate through the security I run on my router, or I will have to open up my router periodically to allow the DSi onto it.
I have a family here addicted to Animal Crossing. They have a blast visiting each other's towns and doing whatever they do. I do know that it makes car trips much more palatable.
If you have existing gameboy, gameboycolor, gameboy advanced games, you won't be able to play them on a DSi since the slot was removed. The battery life is great on either model and both models are inoperable. If you don't care about existing older games, the DSi is the way to go since you can by games for it over the internet... and I believe there's no internal storage, so if you want to buy DSiWare games you'll need a memory card of sorts.
My children have the DS. I have them configured via our router. No need to open ports.

this also means you can't play the old DS guitar hero on the DSi, since the "guitar" plugs into the slot they took away. that shouldn't be a deal breaker though, because it was kind of lame anyway. and they probably already have something in the works, if it's not already on the market... wireless would be sweet
