I just wanted to throw my 2 cents in and say that I appreciate all of the literally thankless jobs that SC does on behalf of DPC. I recently had an entry DQed, but feel that the SC deliberated and voted according to their interpretations of the rules and implemented the majority ruling. That sounds perfectly fair to me - and perfectly diplomatic. I may not be happy or agree with the ruling, but I am willing to accept it when my arguments are overruled.
Sure, there are lots of improvements that can be made to this site - and that is part of what the SC is trying to do here... Isolate sensible, logical, and community-driven suggestions, and then incorporate them into a site's rules that encompasses an increasingly large and diverse population.
Let's try to be fair and polite (and insistent when appropriate); but we've signed up for a site with rules - and SC is the current implementer of those rules - so let's not shoot or harass the messenger. There are a lot of very good people on that panel, who dedicate an inordinate amount of time and energy to the betterment of this site without compensation, pay, or the expectation of thanks.

During my years at DPC, I have been witness to much "SC abuse". I came to the conclusion long ago that they are all masochists, so I try to do my part every once in a while by heaping some pain on them myself.

In fact, Langdon hasn't bothered to adjust the ribbons for the I quit challenge yet so he has no ribbon at all. (That's not SC's fault, but another poorly timed reminder that this thread isn't completely out in left field.)
I'm not trying to say that this thread is out in left field by any means. There are some very good & valid points being brought up here. I was merely voicing my opinion that I believe that SC is doing its job to the best of its ability, based on the current hierarchy and rule set - and that it is really a thankless job.
I left out any mention of the administrators and their responsibilities to the continued growth of this site (on purpose). :-)

actually, no one is waiting on anything. this is supposed to have been adjusted automagically. once any photo is DQ'd, the trailing entries all get bumped up -- including ribbons.
i'm wondering if there's something goofy here since we had to manually add a 4th ribbon the unusual objects challenge.
One thing that might be very healthy for the site/community would be fixed limited terms for the Site Council.
It is a volunteer job.
New blood is healthy - in any organization.
More people might be willing to volunteer if the committment had a fixed term. They would not be put in a situation of having to find a "graceful exit".
I have served on a school board and currently on a national board in my profession. While it is very rewarding - it is still unpaid volunteer work with large time committments and the finite term is welcome.
Perhaps the SC slots can become 3 year appointments (or even elections), with 1/3 changing each year.
There is some very good, well thought-out, and valid discussion going on here about specific topics. I don't want to take anything away from the progress being made here. I applaud it. I withdraw my comments from this particular forum and have opened a new thread to more readily express my own personal sentiments.

I know. I am on that thread too. I guess I was thinking that I've only ever seen one DQ reversed in the four years I've been here so I don't think that's what's keeping bigj from his ribbon.

I remember one...it was a wide angle night city photo that was rotated. I will try and find it.
so, spatula, what change are you really seeking to implement? more SC? different SC? different rules? or are you just dissatisfied with the number of challenge entries we've made?
I honestly don't have a particular beef with SC, and I'm sorry it was taken that way. I was attempting to explain how I perceived Simms entry, and the disconnect between his words and karmat's interpretation. The only issue I have is with the layout of the site, which you SC have no control over. I would prefer a couple more expert editing challenges. I also think there is an unnecessary delay in administrative response langdon and general, but that is the extent of my complaining.

In regard to SC not participating at all, I think this is somewhat ridiculous. I give some credence to the initial approach, but I also find it to be a punishment for SC, as well as an encouragement of objective and ridiculous rulings. If you are concerned about an SC conspiracy against you, go don your tin foil hat and stop taking pictures, because if you think a group of volunteers that are giving their time to DPC are REALLY that concerned with virtual ribbons, you might want to rethink your basis for reality. I think the SC came to DPC with intentions other than becoming the (MWAAHAHAHAHAH!) SC, so take their efforts at face value and give them some slack. If you expect somebody who joined DPC for the community, feedback, competition etc to quit all that in order to volunteer your time, you're truly a masochist.
