...I don't particulary find myself easily offended, and I have pretty thick skin when it comes to constructive criticism. But I do, however, wish that when someone leaves a negative comment, that they at least word it in such a way that at least gives the impression that they are not a jerk (or insert your own expletive there). I have no problem with comments that tell me I should try adjusting the focus, lighting, placement of subject, crop, etc. etc., but comments along the lines of 'a lot of people had this same idea and managed to shoot it much better than you' aren't particularly helpful. Why not just tell me to hang myself and put me out of everyone's misery?!?!?!

well, i noticed that you left several similar comments in the abstract challenge, "I can tell what this is." - not exactly very helpful either... not trying to offend here, just showing how it might feel being on receiving side of unhelpful comment... irina.
At least it wasn't hateful or rude...that's the point I was trying to make. I try to have some tact, whether people find it helpful or not. In abstract, the point was to have something that was not recognizeable as an object. If "I can tell what this is" isn't showing people that their abstract didn't meet my interpretation of the challenge rules, so be it.

so rephrase their comment: your idea is similar to others in this challenge. I find the others more interesting than yours, perhaps you can study the ones similar to yours to expand your creativity'
or they could have just said 'it sucks' LOL
I got a comment a few challenges ago - ' I give it a 1'. I even PMd the commenter to no avail for more info. Oh well. 5 folks voted a 10 - they didn't explain why either! LOL

Some people felt too much emphasis was put on that part of the definition, and that perhaps some voters were examining photos carefully to see if they could recognize it, and so have a reason to lower their vote, rather than appreciating it as an abstract photo first and worrying later (or not at all) about it's recognizability.
I was able to use this in two separate challenges
before anyone "recognized" it, yet it's in no way an abstract photo ... so I don't think whether some particular person is able to recognize a subject is all that important a criterion when evaluating an abstract.
I don't mind rephrasing it the way you put it, which sounds much better and is infinitely more helpful. I just wish folks would think before saying something tacky. Yup ... that's fine -- I think you had a lot of company. Other people applied a variety of different interpretations and that's fine too.
By discussing the various ways of looking at and interpreting a photo you open yourself to more opportunities to both appreciate and criticize photos in the future. Kind of the point of the whole thing ...
I know...I have had a bad day, I have a migraine, and it just flew all over me. I'll be nice from now on. I just had to vent for a moment, and I'm fine now. Thanks! :o)
