I'm really curious about something. I agonized for a quite a bit before entering the still life challenge, trying to decide between two photos. I'm really excited about finishing in the top ten, so I assume that I made the right choice. Here's the two shots:
This was my problem--The still life with the black background was flawed--it had pollen from the flowers on the backdrop. In basic editing, I couldn't find a way to get rid of them. But I think the low key does better on DPC than the high key. (forgive me if I'm using these terms incorrectly--you get the idea) The one white the white background has a very bright spot -- it's the light reflecting off an imperfection in the vase. But it didn't seem as large of a problem as the pollen. I chose the flawed photo because I thought the moodier image would go over better.
The question is: in your mind, which photo works better for you? Moody but flawed, or bright and not as flawed?
Thanks! It doesn't boil down to which do I like better-because I liked them both. (lighting is new to me, so it was a blast playing around with it)
IMO you made the right choice. I do like the flower in the bright one but the lines of the vase are much more attractive when accentuated by the dark. Also the shadow in the second one looks weird to me. The texture of whatever is under the vase?
i think you made the right choice. the tones in the dark backgroung image are a lot softer and easier on the eyes. the white one is too bright and not as pleasing.
