I am relatively new to this forum and website. At first I saw a lot of new and interesting ideas then noticed some similar imagery coming up being repeatedly successful. Isn't that the voter's say and the photographer giving what people want to see? If I wanted to see new ideas and images, where would you suggest I look apart from this wonderful forum?
Hey carlo, I hope my initial response wasn't too snarky, I was just fooling around. Actually, the fact that it is brought up so often is proof that people often feel the same way, and I understand where you're coming from. At the same time, I think one could easily argue that there is a very strong unifying theme amongst photos in National Geographic or most anywhere. It's evidence of at least somewhat of a universally appealing theme. Just because your image isn't universally appealing doesn't mean it isn't appealing. I already sorta posted my views in another thread just a bit ago, so I'll paste the relevant:
Comments usually give you at least a little tidbit which you can use to structure your approach later, if you decide you want to. Just because somebody says they'd like it more this other way, doesn't mean YOU want to guide your style in that direction, but it is still information you can use. I think my entry is successful if I get one person that really likes it, because I am sharing a vision with somebody. Now, it may not be my exact vision or interpretation of things when I captured them, but it is still a vision shared, just interpreted differently. The connection and realization of vision found in photography are what I really enjoy.
As for chales question, the world is full of suggestions. Go create a new one. Photograph something ordinary from a bunch of new and confusing perspectives.
yup slippy sunsets, waterdrops, flowers, fruit, photos of your kids, photos of pretty asian ladies, hmmm. I think photos in general should be banned. lol or not. I don't really look at the photos anyway. I am here for the free food and spirits.

Actually, if you want to find the new and unique stuff here, I would suggest looking at the stuff that comes in mid-pack in most challenges. This is where you will find good photography that is different enough to not have the broad appeal factor that comes in at the top.

I must say I've learnt a great deal from this web site and challenge entries, and I must say I'm also learning from the forum. Actually, I feel very stupid. Firstly, I don't read the forums much and created a topic that's almost hypocritical. Secondly, most the comments have been helpful, but this one stands out the most. Probably 90% of photos in DPC are "cliché", how can you rule out 90%! The fact is, I don't like the glass shots much and they come up relatively often—not really worth starting a forum topic about. The fact that it got a blue ribbon shows most don't have the same view as me.
Don't fret it mate, we are just having a bit of fun with you :)
ETA: You should try a glass shot or 200, they are very hard to do well and you will learn heaps about lighting in your trials... Who knows you might like one enough to submit it! :)

And when you have mastered that try dropping water into it, that should keep you occupied for another few months lol
