What are the images for/from?
For weddings since everyone now asks for disks (that's another discussion) I now give them a 'proof cd' - images are 700 on the longest side. I tell them they'll print 4x6 but not larger, and are good for web, email, slideshows, digital picture frames - i'm convincing them the lo res files have value so they won't want the hi-res - and I can keep the large print sales to myself.
For seniors I give them 'iPics' as I call them - whatever poses they buy they get that image at 700 on the long side...i should make that 400 I suppose. It's for myspace/facebook use and I don't watermark them (for better or worse that's this month's policy). My reps get all their images, but they are marked (and they've not paid for anything yet)
I don't do images on CD for anything else. I've heard it sells well for sports but I've not tried that yet.
Screen sizes are getting bigger and bigger and bigger...mine run 1400 or more on the long side, so a full screen good looking image will beed to be 1400x700 or so...that'll print a 5x7 at 200dpi - lab quality. So my files are 1/2 size...
I don't know what else to tell you...get your money upfront and then not care (i do that with the weddings and seniors so it's not a big deal to me if htey print anything)
