Just wondering if you set a Canon (in my case) 580exII as the master flash and you have a secondary nikon flash set to slave/manual will it fire?

What about a sigma with a canon 580exII?

I think you should be able to, but I'm pretty sure everything would be manual only, otherwise all the preflashes are going to set off the slaves. I think you'd also need to purchase an optical slave if the particular flash you're looking at doesn't have one integrated into it (I know the SB900, SB800, SB26 and SB80DX have one, not sure if any others do).

thx for the reply. I just went out and bought a 430ex. I couldnt stand not having a second flash anymore. tried it out last night and it worked great. will post pics soon.

I guess it's too late now, but I have the Sigma EF530DG as a second unit, which has a built in optical slave. Your setup will be sweeter, since you'll be able to control output on the slave from your camera, whereas I'm on manual.

Once thing I did discover about the 580EXII was that if triggered via the pc port (i.e. with some sort of RF trigger), the master unit functions are disabled. So, the 580 has to be mounted on the camera's hotshoe. grrrr....

Yes. I was able to use my 580EXII as a master unit on a 7D and I slaved TWO SB-700. Just go in the menu and under "REMOTE", choose "SU-4", then put it to "REMOTE" mode, both SB700 will automatically fires with the 580EX. You don't have to do anything with the 580EX, just mount it on the camera's hot shoe. This technique might not work under bright sunlight. I would recommend a Pocket Wizard radio trigger instead. -ZiYang
