I read this article today and found so many truths here. I thought it important to share with other working photographers, hobbyists, and aspiring shooters.

My company offered our services pro bono to the PGA Verizon Heritage golf tournament. We did last year and this year for free. Our business relationships throughout the community have expanded and grown greatly due to our prescence at such a large venue for the area. Someone did get screwed out of a job, and we do good photography, so, yeah sorry to whomever that is but it was a great business decision.

this is a great article. i've been toying with the idea of starting to shoot portraits in my spare time. i haven't made the move to actually do any because i feel unprepared, ie, i need better equipment and i lack photobusiness knowledge. this kind of information gives me more confidence. you and several others here have also been a great inspiration for me btw. thanks.
