My call is: WHY DON"T THEY WANT TO PART WITH THE SECRET?
Were they born great?
They have learnt everything from this site. (With the exception of those who earned their first five blue ribbons in the first five submissions!).
Because there is NO secret. We all have the tools and ability. It's just that some of us know how to put them together with a little more mass appeal than others.

Well executed images with good focus, DOF and low noise.

I agree, there is not any real secret that they are not telling you. These people just know how to create an image with broad appeal. Some people have caught on easier than others. I have seen some people who start off in mediocre land and then something clicks with them after a few challenges and their scores begin trouncing mine left and right. (*cough* vawendy* cough*) Maybe I care less about pleasing others, or they have a style that more people prefer.
On the other hand, there are also the people who struggle to achieve a 5 even after a year or more.
There may be a trick at some level, but I am not sure it is any one thing you can nail down.

Unless you and the overwhelming majority of the site that consists of non-ribboners are implying you have never voted in a challenge, this us vs them is ludicrous. Even taking it as a joke, this is ridiculous. If you can't see photos during voting that will be ribbon winners, I don't really know what to say. The formula is a clean, decisive image that evokes interest of some sort in the viewer.
