Is there someway to select only a portion of a layer to move to front or back before flattening an image? Like if I want to "link" two U shapes - one upside down with the other - I want to make the correct areas overlap, if that makes sense.

I have been able to do it a couple of ways - eraser and pasting half the "U" at a time - but I was thinking there must be an easier way to do it more cleanly with the full layer itself. Thanks for any help.

Think of a layer as a sheet of clear acetate -- you can only move the entire sheet up and down relative to the others.

To do what (I think) you describe, I'd try duplicating the layer, re-ordering the layers, and then do some selective erasing. You can also select the portion you want to move, and paste it onto a new layer.

I'd personally use a "mask" instead of erasing....much more control and "undoable" as you are working.
