It's a tough question to answer with complete accuracy, the main thing is that the background image must not be the main subject of the scene (as I understand it) there's a whole thread about a shot that had a family meal photograph as the background and a wine glass in the foreground which was disqualified, however if you took a shot of some rusty surface and used is as a dingy background texture in a woody scene I would think 99.9% of the time this would be fine, your best bet is to take the picture and submit it to SC for verification as each case will be different.
