I look at the current list of Site Council Members and think to myself, "Lot's of great company there!" I would consider it but I'm no where in the league that is presently a part of the council and I'm afraid of rejection! :)
I think the thing that might help most is an idea of time commitment and responsibilities. Many of us that work and have family obligations already know we couldn't contribute at much of a high enough level, but, posting a "job description" might help those on the fence.

I have 2 kids who are active in Swim Team, Voice, Basketball, swimming lessons, play dates and school (of course).
I work part-time, and my hubby works 2 jobs.
Since DPC is a place I can go to get away from it all, being on Site Council usually only requires me to be sure the forums are running smoothly, and vote for/against DQ's. Of course there is the usual voting and commenting and participating in challenges :P
Now and then there are SC discussions about the direction of DPC and it's sister site DPC Prints.
There are a number of us, so there is usually someone on top of one thing or another. We don't all need to be on top of it at the same moment.
That's it in a nutshell I think :)
Becoming a member of the SC just increases the DPC addiction even more. Not only do you get to do all the "normal DPC stuff", but now you get to spend even more time on the site analyzing files submitted as "proof" for spot-editing in Basic Editing challenges, staring at EXIF data looking for signs of tampering, voting on disqualifications and discussing things like how the rules should be interpreted, etc. Or not. =] Being on the SC is a voluntary position, and the other SC members know that everyone can't always participate in every photo validation due to "real life" stuff. But it is something you should be serious about. And you have to be willing/able to learn some "new stuff", since the "behind the scenes" stuff isn't always as user-friendly, obvious and polished as the rest of the site. And you have to be confident in yourself so that when you click the "Disqualify this photo" button and are crushing somebody's dream that you know you are making the right decision... =]
- Dealing with DQ requests - both voting & discussing
- Monitoring for abuse (forum posts, comments, etc)
- Answering questions on the forums
- Discussing the rules
- Updating the challenge suggestions database
- Bugging D&L about site bugfixes ;o)
This is of course on top of entering challenges, voting, commenting, and chatting on the forums... But it's not that much hard work :o) I probably spend about an hour or so a day on SC tasks, in between all my other commitments.
1) How many current council members are there? 12 + 2 admins
2) How did you come up with 3 as a number needed for new members? replace two vacancies, and add another to make an uneven vote in the event of a tie
3) Is there a deadline for applications? haven't heard, but I would assume soon
4) Is there senior council members or do they all have the same weight in decision making? no senior SC members. Admins get last say in important decisions or ties (doesn't often happen)
2) We've had two SC members retire in the last 6 months, and need to replace them, plus one more would help bolster the numbers and make an odd numbered group (good for voting deadlocks).
3) There's no official deadline yet, but I'd imagine that we'll start reviewing the applicants sometime next week.
I have little photoshop knowledge -- how would that help/hinder? I do know elements but when folks get into a "curves" "layers" jag I can't really follow along. Seems like I'd need to know that in order to work through some of the dqs.
They provide us with a most convenient Subtract One Point button, if that's what you mean ...
Well, that's not very user friendly. I would have to use it on all of the other entries, and there may be hundreds of them! I'd much prefer a simple Adjust Your Score button. Is that so much to ask for? :)

It doesn't take long at all, since it only works on your own photo. The most times you'll ever have to click is ten ...

A good knowledge of digital photography (esp post processing) is useful, but not essential for an SC member. General knowledge of how DPC works and the site rules & etiquette is probably more important, at least in my view.
I kinda don't know anything about editing and exif, but I'm learning a lot from this goony group of people.
And I even had a moment to enter the rust challenge this week!
As soon as I saw this in the forums I became extremely excited. I have a;ways thouhgt that I would enjoy being part of the site council. I told myself as soon as there was a position (even though it may be a long shot for me because there a probably a LOT more qualified people than my self)that I would sign-up for that ASAP. I have a great deal of appreciation for you guys and the work that you do. I know it isn't easy and isn't the fuynnest of jobs, but you guys make this site special. You guys are a real good bunch and I would very much enjoy mixing with the likes of you. I am also really excited to see who else is interested.

Don't be afraid of age, check out Konador. He is only the ripe age of 1...no wait, he's 17 now. This guy is a digital photographic prodigy. I sent in an application and I am the same age as yourself. I don't believe it is age they are looking for. I believe they are looking for those who are really interested and have a good grasp on the site, things like navigation and rules and all that good jazz. If you feel like you would want to, then go for it, theres not reason not to, you never know until you try.
