A friend just pointed out to me something interesting in this week''s winning photo. It seems that in the bottom right corner, there is a black block that seems out of place. It''s not very evident on screen if you don''t have a bright monitor, but it''s more apparent if the image is printed B/W or if you adjust the curves or levels in Photoshop, as in these examples.
I have no basis to say there was or wasn''t any wrongdoing here, but I''d certainly like to understand it better.

I''m not questioning ownership, and I thought maybe it was a date stamp that was there. But, in any case, if this is spot-editing, isn''t that a rules violation?

Someone had asked him about the black thing, and he said it was a cargo carrier or something. I found this on the page that pops up when you click on his picture. Is that what you and he are talking about?

No... the cargo carrier he mentioned in his response to KDJohnson seems to be the ship on the horizon at the right edge. I'm talking about the black rectangle in the lower right corner of the frame, that becomes obvious in the adjusted specimens I posted.
Ya, it appears to be a black blob with about a 45 degree line moving up and to the right. The line is the same color as the blob and not the same as any other black in the photo. Interesting, I'm curious what it is as well.

As the discussion and analysis in this thread cements my concern, I've just sent a request to the site moderators that this photo be considered for disqualification. The decision at this point rests with them.
i think this may be a good place for the moderators to jump in ... wasn't one of the original ideas for having them to help with determining whether photos should be disqualified or not?
i can see arguments both ways ... on the one hand, it wasn't caught during the voting, on the other hand, the rules say no spot editing.

For future challenges, please note the following from the "Image Modifications" section of the site rules:
Post-shot Adjustments may be made to your image in a photo editing program, so long as the modification is applied to the whole image. This includes levels, b&w conversion, hue/saturation, sizing/rotating, cropping etc. However, no filters (or non-Photoshop equivalent) maybe be applied to your image with the exception of sharpen and despeckle, the two of which are allowed. Absolutely no spot-editing is allowed; the use of any type of selection tool is prohibited.

The image you posted with the date on it does not at all correspond with the edited image. The area with the spot edit isn''t even as big as that date in the corner. I think you''re just digging your hole a little deeper here.

if the "original" had the date printed on it...then the one posted on your website, technically...isn't the 'original'. It doesn't have a date because it's been erased too. It still doesn't take away from the fact that it's a beautiful shot...but I'm thinking having a glaring date on it would have swayed the votes in some cases. I'd like to see the one with the date. In any case, we live and learn I suppose.

Definitely a spot-edit then. I'd suggest at this point we wait for an "official" answer from the moderation team rather than beat a dead horse. This is a new situation, so I'd expect we might not have an answer right away.
