not so easy to take pics of chains i see, thought it was just
me.
any tips for depth of field?

Try playing with the Apertures settings.

LOL, sounds like me when I first started.

Aperature is how big that opening is to allow light in onto your film (ccd). If you take a look at the ribbon on the top left hand of this page after dpchallenge, you will see what the aperturee represents, that small opening.

And aperture is indicated by the F number on your camera. On your Sony you can set the aperture by going the the A or M program using the top dial and then selecting the desired F number.

Aperture F2 is a larger opening than aperture F8 (it should be read as 1/2 of glass surface versus 1/8 of glass surface).

A larger opening means less depth of field.

Suggest you pick up a book explaining the principles.
