I agree with your decision.
The entries in the abstract challenge are incredibly good and your image would not be able to compete with them. The hot spot and the granulation in it makes it look more like a poor quality photograph than an intentional composition. Using noise reduction software and/or gaussian blur to smooth out the grain, cloning out the hot spots and repositioning the pupil according to the ROT would help.
