Take it in small bits. Maybe try different commenting styles. On the mid range pics that you can't really wow about or explain your vote, try leaving a little story or some humor. Like that Pentax guy has become famous for and I will occasionally do.
Sometimes I will just mention a memory that a photo brings up for me, or a interesting anecdote it reminds me of. I still consider that a reaction to the image for it to bring up a thought like that.

Good point. The goal is to comment on the images. Not do a complete critique on every single one.
Thanks [user]Yo-Spiff[/user] and Citadel. I am using a variety of approaches with commenting. Some shots leave me totally speechless and I struggle for something, anything. Those take a lot longer. Some elicit a critique. Some just adoration.

Well there is some merit in not commenting on everything that you vote on (at least on the first pass).
Why?
Because it's easy to comment on an image that speaks to you. The image will do it's talking for you.
Find your initial reaction and write it down.
If the image made you linger, write it down. - NOTE: this is a problem with 'speed voting'... if you don't allow yourself to linger, you are missing so much. There were several images that I just stared at for at least 2 minutes before deciding a vote and comment. It's the lingering that makes the comment meaningful.
And don't be afraid to make negative comments when due. This is a tiny bit different from a regular challenge because there are some technical issues of photographs that may need to be specifically overlooked due to the fact that many pictures were taken in the days before noise free ISO 1600 shots and all these special lens coatings.
It is worthwhile to note the technical flaws and decide how this affects your vote. I commented on quite a number of pics about technical flaws that probably decrease their overall vote, but that I personally would *not* consider for the vote. This is both informative and 'friendly'.
Just be sure that when making negative comments that you at least try to make the image equal parts sugar and spice. Not everyone likes the same amount of spice in their cookies.
And having said that, try also to avoid just straight sugar comments. If you have an emotional response, and nothing else to say, that's fine, but unless you are giving the image a 10, there's always going to be something you can say about why you didn't give the image a 10. If you are giving an image a 6 or 7, there could be even more to say.
I usually hover between 3:1 and 40% for my voting to commenting ratio just during the voting, and if I had time, I'd be able to come back and do more passes for more comments.

The reason I'm progressing so "slowly" is because there are many shots that just make me stop and examine them. There are also quite a few that are more "snapshot" quality. And I always try to offer sugar with my spice, if I decide to leave any spice at all.
