It's surf season again and the annual Mavericks contest is waiting on the right combination of weather/waves. Has anyone here ever shot this event from the shore? Or from the water? I'm not expecting pics like this from the shore but it looks like a neat event to shoot.
Years ago my assistant was a surfer, and a surf photographer. I went with him up to Mavericks one winter, extraordinary... Just stpendous, bone-shattering surf.

Well, I happen to have a 21' jet boat, and I used to surf a lot...
Nah! My wife would kill me. :D
If I were to go I would find somebody that really knows that area well. Big waves close to big rocks = dangerocity. Preferably someone that has experience taking people out to watch previous contests at Mavericks. I hear the boat/jetski traffic near the lineup can get kind of crazy.
You might talk with Jim Goldstein, who is a buddy of mine. He's shot at Maverick's for years, mostly clinging from the rocks below the Coast guard/Navy station there in Princeton-by-the-Sea. last year, he was on a boat, and took some fantastic pictures.
He's an approachable guy, so drop him a line, and he'll probably be helpful.
