Have both--VERY good, both fully auto and fully manual. Not good for low light, but it has a hot shoe and you can get a good canon flash for full ttl control.
Night scene/portrait mode works well, too.
Play with one in a store before you buy. (whatever you choose)
Not sure it would be good for covering sport events, but for around campus shooting should be great! Candids work well on it too.
