What happens when, against your better judgment, you enter a shot into a challenge which you know isn't exactly right for the challenge (even if it's a good shot)? Can you unsubmit it? And if so, is there a downside to that in terms of submitting to later challenges? It probably does affect the scores, but I'm not as concerned about that.

If it is already in voting, you are pretty much stuck and it will likely just get low voted for DNMC. If voting has not started yet, there is a button on the challenge upload page to unsubmit it. I don't know how there woudl be any downside, but I am not totally sure what you may mean.
You can have your image removed from voting by contacting Site Council. The upside is you will not get any more votes counted towards your overall average. I don't see much of a downside other than missing out on some constructive criticism.
Thanks yospiff. Yes, it's in voting, and I meant to unsubmit it before voting started, but got distracted. By downside, I mean are there limits to how many times you can unsubscribe, or do you somehow get dinged for unsubscribing.
Thanks everyone. If I understand correctly, the only "down side" in keeping it in the challenge is that it lowers my overall score. And also that once the voting starts, the SC has to remove it.

No - if you self DQ the image does not show up as a DQ'ed image at the end of the challenge results listing. But it counts against you in the same way as one that was DQ'ed for a rules violation.

You can request a self-DQ, your image will be pulled from the challenge and no one will ever see it again. :)
