I presumed the tone curve was the LR version of curves. I don't see why you can't use that. Definitely not the post-crop vignette sliders.
In LR2, you need to make sure you don't use any of the spot editing tools (obviously) and vignetting. Watch out for "presets" because they often turn on vignetting.
Curves, Clarity, and Vibrance adjustments are fine when applied in the GLOBAL area (not using the spot editing tools).
In fact, other than Vignette, all the other "global" tools in LR are fine in Basic.
Exception: The spot editing tool "could" be used to remove sensor dust and hot pixels (only). Be careful though that what you remove IS ACTUALLY SENSOR DUST OR A HOT PIXEL. If you remove ordinary dust (part of the scene), you will be DQd.
