Did you know there will be a total solar eclipse this year, on Jul 22? It's going to pass northwesterly over the smaller islands of Okinawa between Naha and Kyushu, then bend and go directly over Shanghai towards India. (That's as much as the map in the astronomy magazine I was looking at in the store showed). No doubt there are websites with more information.
I've been thinking about going to Okinawa on my vacation, and could possibly be there on the 22nd July, where the coverage will be fuller than here in Utsunomiya (only 75%).
Any tips for taking photos without buying specialised equipment? (i.e using what I've got.)

There's a group (not necessarily photographers) which has arranged to fly along the path of totality in a jet, which will extend the duration markedly. Only $9000 for your own window seat, I think not including getting yourself to Tahiti (or wherever they're taking off from) first ...
Check out this picture -- it uses (essentially) HDR techniques (33 originals) to bring out detail in the Sun's corona not seen in normal photos.
