Is anyone else tired of hearing people say certain people have figured out the formula for winning ribbons I know I am. When I look at peoples work I often see a style, in some cases you don't need to see who took it you just know and isn't that a good thing, wouldn't you immediately know a Monet or Van Gogh painting if you saw one and that seems perfectly ok. But here they say the photographer figured out the formula like it is a bad thing, cop out or something like that. I see it as their style that they have stayed true to and that people like it and consistently vote these images high because they also like the shots. There are others whose style is just as consistant that never win ribbons and I also applaud them for being true to their style so why can't we applaud the ribbon winners who have done the same. Just an opinion but all this out of the box talk sometimes gets me. Also when I hear the winners are all just pretty shots and others are better and we the voters just don't understand I get annoyed. Isn't it what the vote is all about and if the majority of people like the image then how can some people say they shouldn't have won. I guess I just don't get it. We all like what we like.

for the asian challenge there is a high key, a low key and an action shot in the top 3.
and the transparency winners are 2 very different still lifes and very different portrait.
for the elderly portrait challenge the top 3 are all b/w, but i guess that does fit the subject well.
the short of it is that all different kinds of shots can and do win.
I agree also, There is no formula for winning a ribbon however pointing out the front page today is not real convincing when you see 6 out of the 9 current names on the front page quite often. Have these people figured something out, Yes they figured out how to take nice photos. If there is a formula, they are drinking it from a bottle and it should be sold at camera stores everywhere.
ETA: Actually all 9 people on front page have won 2 or more ribbons.

you are right in what you are saying, but i would say that 'MAK' for example has ribbons with portraits, wildlife, landscapes etc etc.
SandyP has wildlife and portrait ribbons.
Enzo ribbons are mainly landscapes or cityscapes, but this week he has a portrait.
and SenorKasper has a good variety to his name as well.
the point is that there is not one way to win a ribbon.
the great photographers here will win any number of ways.
I think anyone who has a style should change it immediately because it is dishonest and in flagrant contravention of the principle of anonymity in challenges.
I guess you could say that Tiger Wood had found the formula for winning at golf. Or that LaBron James had found the formula for winning at Basketball. Or that Robin Cook had found the formula for writing a best seller (well his books are formula thrillers, but I digress).

The secret formula, kids, is mastering the science of photography (camera and editing) and coupling that mastery with a great eye for photos that appeal broadly ... not necessarily in that order.

Well apparently, the formula for keeping favorites from certain people is to stay on their good side. Yup I track this sort of thing but it's all good. I'll continue to fav photos from those people if the photos warrant it. I guess I'm just hopelessly mature.
Depends, if you view this site as being Democratic, just take a great photo and you will ribbon. If it veers towards Socialism, then make alot of friends.... lol, in some cases, not in all, but some ribbon winners don['t belong on the podium.
